Manchin Responds to President Obama's Executive Actions

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) today issued the following statement on President Obama’s executive actions on gun measures.

“As Governor, I worked with members of both political parties in West Virginia to reach commonsense solutions on important issues. And as Senator, I worked with Republican Senators like Pat Toomey, Mark Kirk, Susan Collins, and John McCain to introduce a commonsense background check bill that protected the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners, while also ensuring criminals and those adjudicated mentally insane were unable to purchase guns.

“Instead of taking unilateral executive action, the President should work with Congress and the American people, just as I’ve always done, to pass the proposals he announced today. Like all law-abiding Americans and gun owners, I want to prevent future incidents of gun violence and keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill, but legislation and consensus is the correct approach.”
