Washington, D.C. -- Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin congratulated West Virginia’s 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholars, David A. Buch of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley and Nicole M. Hegele of Shady Spring High School in Shady Spring. The Raleigh County students were selected by the White House Commission from more than 3,000 qualifying candidates for their academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to school and community.

“With their hard work and dedication in their academics and in their communities, David and Nicole have truly earned this nationally distinguished award,” Senator Manchin said. “These two young leaders have set an extraordinary example to all West Virginians and they should inspire us all to strive for excellence in our lives and in our own Mountain State communities. I applaud David and Nicole on their accomplishments and I look forward to learning about their many more future success stories.”

The two Mountain State honorees are among 141 high school seniors who traveled to Washington, D.C. this week for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program’s annual National Recognition Week, where their award was commemorated with an official ceremony.
