Manchin Speaks Out Against Defense Budget Gimmick to Fund Wars Without Paying for Them

Senator Manchin calls for a more fiscally responsible approach to reducing the deficit

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) delivered remarks on the Senate floor to stress the importance of preventing any additional war funding until Congress gets serious about addressing the nation’s budget.

“I have always said that being a super power means more than super military might; it means super diplomacy, super restraint and super fiscal responsibility,” Senator Manchin said. “The U.S. has – and will continue to have – the greatest military in the world. But in order to remain the greatest, we have to get our financial house in order. That is why I fully support Senator Reed’s amendment to block extra war funding until we seriously address our budget. The bottom line is that we need to focus on a long-term plan to reduce the nation’s debt and deficit. And using a budget gimmick to increase funding for never-ending wars does nothing to address that problem.”
