Washington Coal Club honors Manchin | Parkersburg News and Sentinel

WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., is being honored by the Washington Coal Club for his contributions to the coal industry.

The group announced Wednesday it would present Manchin with its Annual Achievement Award, which honors an individual or individuals who have recently made a meaningful contribution to the health and sustainability of the larger coal community.

Manchin, a former governor of West Virginia, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 and has been a national voice for the coal industry.

"As West Virginia's former governor and now as U.S. senator, I have always fought for and pledge to continue to fight for coal -- our coal heritage, our coal industry and our hardworking coal miners. I am honored to accept this national recognition from the Washington Coal Club," Manchin said in a press release Wednesday.

During the past year, Manchin has worked to create partnerships among all interested constituencies to support policies that maintain coal's significant role in the domestic fuel mix, protect the pensions of retired miners, and ensure new regulatory mandates on coal-fueled power are fair, achievable and based on demonstrated technologies.

"As a Member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, I have urged my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to work with the coal industry on shared goals, expanded developments and smart investments," Manchin said. "Coal provides the greatest share of electricity we use, generating around 40 percent of our power, and will continue to be a major source of electricity for at least the next 30 years."

Formalized in 1981, the Washington Coal Club is a Washington, D.C.-based not-for-profit organization of more than 300 individuals with diverse interests in coal, ranging from its production to its utilization.
