Senator Manchin Selects Emily Bittner as Communications Director

Bittner, a West Virginian, Will Oversee Communications Operations

Washington, D.C. — Senator Joe Manchin has named Emily Bittner, a West Virginian and former communications director for the Democratic Governors Association, as his DC-based communications director.

“Emily is uniquely qualified for this work: She grew up in West Virginia, she is sharp, hard-working, and she understands how to communicate a commonsense approach to government,” Senator Manchin said. “From her work with the Democratic Governors Association to her time as a reporter, she is a skilled communications professional who will make our strong team even stronger.”

“I’m honored to serve Senator Manchin. Now more than ever, the American people are looking to new leaders, and I look forward to helping him communicate his commonsense vision and ideas that have already done so much good in my home state,” Bittner said. “I have deep respect for Senator Manchin’s commitment to the people of West Virginia and our country. It’s a true privilege to help him serve the people of a state that I called home for so long.”

Bittner most recently served as communications director at the Democratic Governors Association when the committee significantly outperformed expectations. She was also communications director for the Arizona Democratic Party during the tenure of then-Governor Janet Napolitano. Bittner has strong ties to West Virginia, where her father was a pastor in Teays Valley and she attended elementary and junior high school. She received the state’s prestigious Golden Horseshoe Award. Ms. Bittner graduated in 2002 from Northwestern University with degrees in political science and journalism and was a reporter for several years at The Arizona Republic.

This week also marks the official start date for Kelley Goes as Senator Manchin’s State Director. Ms. Goes, whose appointment was already announced, will oversee Senator Manchin’s West Virginia operations. A graduate of Braxton County High School, Ms. Goes served as Secretary of Commerce and Executive Director of the West Virginia Development Office in Governor Manchin’s Administration. Previously, she worked as Deputy Secretary and General Counsel in the West Virginia Department of Commerce, and she has worked in the West Virginia Attorney General’s office and in private law practice. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Ms. Goes received her law degree from the University of Kentucky.
