Senators Manchin and McConnell Raise the Stakes on NCAA Sweet 16 Matchup

Senators wager regional food favorites in advance of WVU and UK’s game

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) today made a friendly wager on tonight’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Sweet 16 matchup between the West Virginia University Mountaineers and the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The stakes from the friendly wager are a Derby-Pie® exclusively baked by Kern's Kitchen in Louisville, Kentucky against Chico’s Bakery pepperoni rolls, the official pepperoni rolls sold at Mountaineer Field for WVU games. The game is scheduled to start at approximately 9:45 p.m. EST.

“As proud West Virginia University alumni and loyal Mountaineer fans, Gayle and I are looking forward to cheering on the Mountaineers during tonight’s game against the Kentucky Wildcats,” said Senator Manchin. “I was there five years ago when we upset the Number 1 ranked Kentucky team, and I have the utmost confidence that our tough WVU team can do it again. Hail West Virginia!”

“As we all know, the Commonwealth of Kentucky is the basketball capital of the world. Big Blue Nation has a lot to be excited about as it pursues its ninth men’s basketball National Championship and an undefeated record,” said Senator McConnell, who is a proud graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Law. “I look forward to enjoying Chico’s Bakery pepperoni rolls as I watch UK play in the Elite Eight game.”

If the Mountaineers upset the Wildcats, Senator McConnell will send Senator Manchin Kentucky’s famous Derby-Pie®, which is exclusively baked by Kern's Kitchen in Louisville. Following a Kentucky win, Senator Manchin will send to Senator McConnell a basket of Chico’s Bakery pepperoni rolls, which has been a staple snack across Appalachia since its origin in the coal mines during the first half of the 20th Century.
