Manchin Congratulates Mountain State University and University of Charleston for Coming Together

Washington, D.C. – After working with the leaders of both Mountain State University and the University of Charleston, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D- W.Va.) congratulated the educators’ successful agreement to continue higher education in Beckley. The University of Charleston will take over the operation of Mountain State University effective January 1.

“There is no finer testament to the emphasis on education, community, and public service than the efforts of these exemplary college presidents. With the interests of students, faculty, and the community of Beckley as their top priority, the passion to complete this deal before the fall semester has been amazing,” Senator Manchin said. “I am honored to have played a part and proud of the two outstanding professionals who have announced this new chapter in education here in Beckley.

“I especially congratulate the two fine and dedicated educators behind this agreement: Dr. Richard Sours and Dr. Ed Welch. I know that these two gentlemen have worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality because I have been there with them as they negotiated the accreditation, the finances, and the educational details. I also want to personally thank Elmer Coppoolse and the board members for their dedication to this community and for supporting this agreement. I also thank Sylvia Manning, president of the Higher Learning Commission, and her staff for their expedited work and understanding of the important roles that MSU plays in the lives of our students and the community. I look forward to many years of educating our students and making the community of Beckley strong.”
