Top youth volunteers will receive a cash prize, engraved medallions and a trip to Washington, D.C. for the national recognition events

Application deadline is November 4

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Joe Manchin today encouraged West Virginia students in grades 5-12 who have been involved in volunteer community service to apply for the 20th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. The program will present awards to recognize the students’ dedication and contributions to their community on the local, state and national level. Students chosen to be state honorees will receive a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion and a trip to Washington, D.C. on May 2-5, 2015 for the national recognition events. The application deadline is November 4.

“I have always said that West Virginians of all ages understand the importance of serving the community and helping their neighbors,” Senator Manchin said. “There are so many young West Virginians across our state who are making a difference by helping others, and I encourage them to apply for the Prudential Spirit of Awards Program. This is a unique opportunity for our youth volunteers to be recognized and rewarded for their outstanding contributions to their communities.”

To apply, students must submit an online application and have it certified by their school principals, the Girl Scout council, county 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or HandsOn Network affiliate.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program recognizes middle and high school students annually for their volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 and has recognized over 100,000 students since, making it is the nations’ largest youth recognition program. It is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
