Transportation Worker 2 Building and Trade – Mineral County

Nature of Work

The Transportation Worker 2 Building and Trade will report to the District Five Headquarters. Under general supervision, performs skilled work in building, repairing, and maintaining all Division of Highways structures which includes constructing, pouring, and finishing concrete using various building equipment. Duties also include replacing walls and repairing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, pipes, drains, and waterlines. Installing simple electrical equipment and assist in installing more complex electrical equipment. Controls brush and vegetation using hand tolls and mowers. May be responsible for moving furniture and equipment as well as supplies. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required. 

• Preference will be given to applicants with a certification in HVAC, electric, plumbing, or journeyman mason or carpentry. 

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).


Pay Grade: 11H
Base Hourly Rate: $13.9495

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Typical Duties and Responsibilities of this classification are dependent upon the functional area assigned:
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license may be required.
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for Auto Body Repair, Bridge Maintenance, Mechanic, Building & Trade, or Traffic Control.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the assigned area after employment.  


Transportation Worker 2 – Building & Trade
• Construct concrete forms
• Pours, vibrates and finishes concrete using electric vibrators and trowels.
• Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and mowers
• Repair and replace walls and other wooden articles or equipment
• Install simple electrical equipment, assist in installation of more complex electrical equipment
• Repair and replace sinks, toilets, pipes, drains, and waterlines
• Move furniture and equipment, load and unload supplies
• A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License may be required for Building & Trade.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the assigned area after employment. 

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the assigned area
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures of the assigned area
• Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades
• Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used
• Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the assigned area
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools
• Ability to climb high steel structures
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments
• Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders)
• Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the assigned areas
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers

Required Education and Experience

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 
• No formal education required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE 
• Building & Trade: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in construction, maintenance, plumbing, electrical, or HVAC work.
• Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in any of the listed areas of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
