Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) reminded and encouraged West Virginians to apply for health insurance coverage during the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Special Enrollment Period. President Biden recently extended the Special Enrollment Period until August 15th, 2021.

“Every West Virginian deserves access to affordable, reliable healthcare, and I’m pleased President Biden extended the Special Enrollment Period to give Americans without coverage more time to apply for health insurance. The American Rescue Plan - which was passed in March - also increased the premium tax credits for consumers, leading to lower premiums and cheaper health plans for many Americans. I won’t stop fighting to increase affordable healthcare access for all West Virginians, and I encourage every West Virginian without health insurance to visit healthcare.gov to find a plan that works for you and your family before August 15th,” said Senator Manchin.

In April, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra announced that the American Rescue Plan increased premium tax credits to consumers, which would help lower premium payments. On average, many Americans will see their premiums decrease $50 per person each month and $85 per policy each month, with four out of five consumers being able to find a plan for $10 or less per month.

In January, Senator Manchin applauded President Biden’s executive order to open the ACA for a Special Enrollment Period beginning on February 15th. From the start of the enrollment period to March 31st, 2,162 West Virginians have signed up for healthcare coverage through the ACA. In March, he also applauded the decision to extend the Special Enrollment Period three months later to August 15th to allow Americans more time to apply for coverage.
