Manchin, Rockefeller, Rahall Announce Federal Funding For Three WV Fire Departments

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, and Congressman Nick Rahall today announced more than $173,000 in federal funding for three West Virginia fire departments to purchase safety equipment, and strengthen professional training and wellness programs.

“West Virginia’s volunteer firefighters are completely dedicated to our state, our communities, and our families. That unwavering commitment deserves our support,” said Rockefeller.  “Providing professional training and safety equipment helps make sure our firefighters have the tools and training needed to protect West Virginians, while also making sure they’re safe on the job. This funding helps guarantee that they will be ready for any and all emergencies that affect our communities and loved ones.”

“Our first responders in West Virginia sacrifice so much to protect our families and our homes,” said Manchin, who has worked with the volunteer rescue squad in Marion County. “These grants help make sure our local fire departments have access to the necessary equipment and training they need to keep our communities safe and secure each and every day.”
“Budget issues can not threaten the added  margins of safety, training and wellness programs funds like these provide our dedicated firefighters, who more often than not, are volunteering their time to serve their neighbors,” said Rahall.  “As a partner with states and local governments, the Federal commitment must remain strong to keep our Country strong.”

The award will help fund professional training, including the purchase of equipment for fitness and wellness programs. It also helps departments obtain emergency vehicles, protective equipment, and other safety supplies. The funding comes from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program, a competitive grant program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
