Manchin Votes To Confirm Surgeon General Murthy

Washington, DC –Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), voted to confirm Dr. Vivek Murthy as Surgeon General.

“This evening I voted to confirm Dr. Vivek Murthy as Surgeon General. During his previous tenure as Surgeon General, Dr. Murthy worked to create a culture of public health promotion grounded in nutrition, physical activity and emotional well-being to help prevent conditions like obesity and diabetes that affect many West Virginians. Dr. Murthy also released a report outlining plans to reduce opioid prescriptions and expand access to treatment for those suffering from a substance use disorder, an issue many West Virginians know all too well. He understands the issues facing this nation including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the drug epidemic and protecting rural healthcare. Dr. Murthy has confirmed his commitment to remaining non-partisan as Surgeon General and reaffirmed his belief that the vast majority of gun-owning Americans are responsible and follow the law. For these reasons, I believe Dr. Murthy is qualified to be Surgeon General and I look forward to working with him to address the numerous issues facing our nation.”
