Wednesday: Manchin Unveils Plan to Combat Drug Abuse

Washington, D.C. — Beginning at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Cabell Huntington Hospital, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) will host his second day of events for “Commonsense Solutions” Week, leading a group of community leaders, physicians and members of law enforcement to roll out new federal measures to combat West Virginia’s drug scourge.

West Virginia has one of the nation’s highest rates of drug overdose deaths, and Senator Manchin will announce his support for commonsense solutions that will protect the state and the nation’s children and families from substance abuse.

“Prescription drugs and retail drugs such as bath salts and synthetic marijuana are hurting our families and communities. Ignoring this drug abuse epidemic is unacceptable. The social and economic effects are just too high, and the moral costs are even higher,” Senator Manchin said. “We must come together with commonsense solutions to this problem, and I am pleased to support several measures that will make a difference in protecting our children, families and communities from drug abuse.”

At 4 p.m. tomorrow, Senator Manchin will visit Marshall University to speak to students.

Senator Manchin launched “Commonsense Solutions” Week today in South Charleston, kicking off a series of events devoted to presenting commonsense solutions that will help solve some of the most pressing challenges facing West Virginia and the country.

As part of “Commonsense Solutions” week, Senator Manchin will travel across West Virginia to introduce a series of new policy proposals and solutions to problems including our nation’s fiscal crisis, high unemployment rates and substance abuse in our communities.
